How does HOB compare to the 2023 Lord of the Rings set?
The 2023 Lord of the Rings set (LTR) was Modern-legal only — a much smaller competitive buyer pool. HOB is Standard-legal, which brings in every player grinding store championships, regionals, and Pro Tours on top of Tolkien collectors. That second wave of demand is already visible in presale prices.
Can you pull the Gleaming Gold Smaug at prerelease?
Approximately 500 copies of the Gleaming Gold Smaug the Magnificent exist worldwide — WotC's official figure. It's a Collector Booster exclusive; it cannot appear in a Prerelease Pack or any Play Booster. In a 144-pack Collector Booster sample (Cardboard Chronicles), the Gleaming Gold went 0-for-144. Statistically, you'd need 5,000+ Collector Boosters to have a reasonable shot — roughly $190,000 at MSRP.
The presale market has it listed at $20,000–$30,000+ per community trackers — speculative asks only, with no confirmed transactions before the August 14 release. It's also NOT serialised, so there's no serial number to authenticate a copy. Insist on a graded slab or in-hand inspection before paying a premium. The pull odds don't make pack-cracking the rational play here.
What can you pull at prerelease?
Your Prerelease Pack holds Play Boosters — no Gleaming Gold, no Surge Foils, no Dwarvish Language cards. But legitimate hits are available:

The consensus: wait. Standard prerelease events will flood the market with cracked product through August 14. Standard sets historically see sharp price movement in the weeks after release as supply clears. Cards with structurally capped supply — Gleaming Gold and Dwarvish Language — are the exceptions.
