2025-26 Topps Definitive Basketball: What to Chase

Topps enters the NBA Definitive business on Friday, September 18: $7,499 a box, six on-card autos guaranteed, and letter-by-letter nameplate cards cut from actual game-worn jerseys. This is the brand's first licensed basketball Definitive, following football (2015), baseball (2017), and UEFA soccer (2024-25). Here's what's worth chasing.
What Makes Definitive Different From Every Other High-End Set?
Every autograph is on-card, every hit is premium, and distribution runs through Topps' EQL lottery: register, Topps selects buyers at random, MSRP $7,499 direct. No hobby shops, no scalper queues.
The brand already commands four and five figures for premium 1/1 relics across its football and baseball editions. Basketball is the new frontier.
The Nameplate Rabbit Hole: How Deep Does It Go?
Every letter of a player's surname is cut from their actual game-worn jersey nameplate into a separate 1/1 card. Topps' own teaser: "Ready to spell out WEMBANYAMA?" That's ten 1/1s. "GILGEOUS-ALEXANDER" is seventeen, the most in the set; "ANTETOKOUNMPO" is thirteen.
- WEMBANYAMA — 10 letters, 10 separate 1/1 cards
- GILGEOUS-ALEXANDER (SGA) — 17 letters, most in the set
- ANTETOKOUNMPO (Giannis) — 13 letters
- JAMES (LeBron), CURRY, TATUM — 5 each
- EDGECOMBE (rookie) — 9; KNUEPPEL — 8; FLAGG — 5
Rookies: Who Is Actually Worth Chasing?
The Definitive Rookie Patch Autographs (DRPA) pair on-card signatures with game-worn jersey patches, numbered /35 down to Gold 1/1. Confirmed subjects include Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, Kon Knueppel, and 17 others.
Flagg is the centrepiece: the 2026 NBA ROY averaged 21.0 ppg, 6.7 reb, and 4.5 ast across 70 games, only the third rookie in 45 years to clear 20/6/4. His existing Topps 1/1s show where collector appetite sits: the 2025-26 Topps Chrome Sapphire Padparadscha Auto #TCAR-CF (PSA NM 7) sold for $366,000 on Goldin on 2026-03-07, and the 2025-26 Topps Chrome Helix SuperFractor #H-11 (PSA 10) sold for $197,640 on Goldin on 2026-05-10. Those are prior sales of different Topps products, not predictions for Definitive prices.
What Else Is in the Box?
Triple Autographs (/10) feature three on-card signatures per card across confirmed combos including Jokić/Giannis/SGA and Shaq/Hakeem/Kareem. Framed Autograph Collection cards (Legends, Veterans, Rookies tiers) run down to Gold 1/1.
The Rookie Defining Games Relic Auto (RDGR) is a Flagg-and-Knueppel-only subset, the sole insert dedicated exclusively to both rookies. If you pull one, snap a photo to value it instantly in CardLoft before posting anywhere else.
- Jokić / Giannis / SGA
- Shaq / Hakeem / Kareem
- SGA / Williams / Holmgren
- Dirk / Nash / Finley
What About Panini Noir on the Same Day?
Panini Noir Basketball also drops September 18 at ~$849.95 a box with five autos guaranteed, but it's unlicensed this year, meaning no NBA logos and no team names. Flagg and Knueppel are Topps exclusives; they don't appear in Noir at all.
Noir's rookie headliners are V.J. Edgecombe, Tre Johnson III, and Jeremiah Fears. Same Friday, very different products. Worth knowing before you register for either.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Topps EQL system?
A direct-to-consumer lottery. Register for the chance to buy at MSRP ($7,499); Topps picks buyers randomly. No retail distribution.
Is Cooper Flagg in Panini Noir Basketball?
No. Flagg is a Topps exclusive. Knueppel is also Topps-only. Noir's rookie headliners are Edgecombe, Tre Johnson III, and Jeremiah Fears.
How do the Definitive Nameplates work?
Each letter of a player's surname is cut from their actual game-worn jersey nameplate into its own 1/1 card. There's no official prize for completing a name; letters trade individually on the secondary market.
What is the Rookie Defining Games Relic Auto?
An exclusive subset for Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel only, pairing on-card autos with game-worn relics. The only insert in the product dedicated solely to both rookies.
Can I track and value my Definitive pulls in CardLoft?
